Specialist at the International Health Department and researcher at ISGlobal

Dr Alex Almuedo Riera is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the International Health Department of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona–University of Barcelona, and a clinical researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).

With a professional career focused on emerging and high-risk infectious diseases, he has developed clinical, teaching and research activities in areas such as viral haemorrhagic fevers, high-level isolation units (HLIUs) and global health, with a particular interest in the health of migrant populations. He has undertaken research stays and fieldwork in several countries, including Nigeria, Bolivia, Sierra Leone and Mozambique.

Since 2022, he has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a member and consultant of the Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers team, contributing to capacity-building, preparedness and outbreak response initiatives, as well as to the development of global strategies.

He is an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in the field of global health.
