The ICN aims to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to people with neurological diseases and mental health disorders, while promoting research and innovation in these fields.
Until now, Dr Eduard Vieta has been Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Hospital Clínic Barcelona. He will continue his work as a researcher at IDIBAPS, where he leads the Bipolar and Depressive Disorders research group and coordinates the Translational Research Programme in Brain Disorders. He is also a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Institute of Neurosciences at the University of Barcelona. His research has focused particularly on the causes and pharmacological and psychological treatment of bipolar disorder, as well as on Precision Psychiatry.
Throughout his career, Dr Vieta has contributed to identifying neurocognitive dysfunctions associated with bipolar disorder and studying potential treatments, as well as demonstrating the effectiveness of psychoeducation and promoting the clinical development of new pharmacological treatments. His scientific activity has a strong international dimension and has included roles such as Scientific Director of the Centre for Biomedical Research Network in Mental Health (CIBERSAM) and advisor to the European Presidency on neuroscience research.
Extensive scientific and teaching output
The new Director of the Clinical Institute of Neurosciences has an extensive scientific record and significant international recognition. He has published more than 800 original articles in national and international journals and more than 400 book chapters. He has received several scientific awards, including the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum Research Award, the Colvin Prize and the Mogens Schou Award. In 2017, he was recognised as Researcher of the Year by the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and received the Simón Bolívar Award from the American Psychiatric Association.
With this appointment, Dr Eduard Vieta takes on the challenge of leading the Clinical Institute of Neurosciences and continuing to promote an integrated approach to healthcare, research and teaching. His experience in clinical practice, translational research and professional training will contribute to strengthening the Institute’s position as a leading centre for the management of neurological diseases and mental health disorders, while continuing to advance increasingly personalised care based on scientific knowledge.
