Dr. Josep Maria Miró Meda, Senior Consultant of the Infectious Diseases Department at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Head of the Endocarditis and Cardiovascular Infections Experimental Model Group at IDIBAPS, Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, and elected Academician number 35 of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (RAMC), has been honored with the 2025 Josep Trueta Award.
The award was presented to him on May 20 during the closing ceremony of the 2024-2025 academic year of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, an event attended by around 350 people, including the Minister of Health, Dr. Olga Pané; Mr. Carles Campuzano, President of the Health Commission of the Parliament of Catalonia; and Dr. Joan Guàrdia, Rector of the University of Barcelona.
An award for excellence in research and healthcare
The Josep Trueta Award recognizes the research career, individually or as part of a group, in the health sciences, highlighting the contribution of professionals who have made significant advances for society in recent years. Dr. Miró has been distinguished for his pioneering work in the study and treatment of infectious diseases, especially in the field of HIV/AIDS and infectious endocarditis, areas in which he has led internationally impactful research projects.
A benchmark career at Clínic and IDIBAPS
In the field of research, he has published nearly 1,200 articles, 1,000 of them indexed in PubMed. His Impact Factor exceeds 7,600 points, with 43,544 citations and an h-index of 94. He has supervised 25 doctoral theses, all awarded Cum Laude, three of them with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He has presented more than 1,200 communications at national (450) and international (750) conferences. He has edited 50 books and authored 300 book chapters on infectious diseases, endocarditis, HIV/AIDS, and antimicrobials.
He is a member of several infectious diseases societies (SEIMC, SCMIMC, ASM, IDSA, ESCMID), HIV/AIDS societies (GESIDA, IAS, EACS), and cardiovascular infections societies (SEICAV, ISCVID). He has served as president of GESIDA (1998-99), the Catalan (SCMIMC, 2005-07) and Spanish (SEIMC, 2013-15) Societies of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, and is currently president of the International Society of Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases (ISCVID) (2019-27). Dr. Miró was the HIV/AIDS Editor for the journal Revista de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología Clínica (2002-14) and is the head of the HIV/AIDS group at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona in the CIBERINFEC of the Carlos III Health Institute, Madrid. Finally, Dr. Miró is one of the few European infectious diseases specialists recognized by both the American (IDSA) and European (ESCMID) societies for professional excellence as FIDSA and ESCMID Fellow.
