A leading figure in the field of apheresis
Dr. Lozano, Head of the Hemotherapy Section at Hospital Clínic Barcelona and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, is a specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy and holds a PhD from the same university. Linked to the Clínic since his residency, he has been Head of Section since 2009 and combines clinical activity with a distinguished academic and research career in transfusion medicine and apheresis.
At the international level, he has held several leadership positions, including President of the European Society for Haemapheresis (2014–2022) and Vice President for Europe of the World Apheresis Association (2018–2024), before being appointed President. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Vox Sanguinis. Throughout his career, he has authored more than 250 scientific articles, as well as books and book chapters, and has been highly active in national and international conferences, with over one hundred invited lectures.
A leading international organization in apheresis
The World Apheresis Association is an international organization that brings together scientific societies from around the world dedicated to research and clinical practice in apheresis. It was founded in 1984 in Dijon (France) and held its first international congress in 1986 in Tokyo. Since then, it has become a key platform for scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange in this medical field.
Currently, the WAA includes more than twenty national and international societies, among them the Spanish Group of Apheresis, providing a comprehensive and global perspective on apheresis activity worldwide.
What is apheresis?
Apheresis comprises a set of medical techniques that allow specific components of the blood, such as plasma or blood cells, to be separated for therapeutic or donation purposes. These techniques are used both for blood component collection and for the treatment of various diseases, particularly hematological, neurological, autoimmune, and metabolic disorders.
One of the main goals of the WAA is to promote the safe and effective use of apheresis, foster high standards of clinical and technical quality, and support ongoing education and research in this field.
Priorities of the new term
In his first message as President, Dr. Miquel Lozano expressed his commitment to advancing research and improving care for patients and donors worldwide. Key priorities of his term include strengthening collaboration among scientific societies, promoting educational initiatives, and expanding the global reach of the association.
The new president also highlighted the importance of the WAA International Apheresis Registry, a key tool for collecting clinical data, analyzing outcomes, and generating evidence-based recommendations to improve clinical practice.
Recognition of a professional career
Dr. Miquel Lozano Molero’s appointment as President of the World Apheresis Association represents recognition of his professional career and his contribution to the development of apheresis worldwide. His term also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the association’s first formal meeting, a key moment to reflect on past achievements and future challenges in this field of medicine.
