Hospital Clínic Barcelona-IDIBAPS has been one of the centres most widely recognised in the annual grants and awards programme of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), receiving eight grants among the 70 awards granted to professionals and research groups across Spain.
SEOM grants and awards are among the leading initiatives supporting training, international mobility and research in medical oncology. Each year, they are awarded through a highly competitive process that assesses candidates’ scientific excellence, the relevance of the projects submitted and their potential impact on improving care for people with cancer.
Receiving eight of the 70 grants awarded represents an important recognition of the scientific and clinical standards of the professionals at the Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Centre and reflects the centre’s contribution to research, innovation and specialist training in oncology. It also demonstrates its ability to lead innovative projects and train talent at some of the world’s leading cancer centres.
International training at centres of excellence
Among the grants awarded, the SEOM Research Fellowship will enable Dr. Víctor Albarrán Fernández to undertake a two-year research stay at the Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, United States).
In addition, Dr. Florián Castet and Dr. Juan Carlos Laguna Montes have been awarded SEOM Visiting Fellowships to complete 11-month and 12-month placements at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Toronto, Canada) and the Gustave Roussy Institute (France), respectively.
As part of specialised training for medical residents, Dr. Carlota Rubio Pérez has received a SEOM travel grant to undertake an external rotation at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
Recognition of research talent
The call has also recognised two Clínic researchers with the SEOM Award for Best Doctoral Thesis for Young Investigators. The awardees are Dr. Laura Angelats Company and Dr. Marta García de Herreros Dunyac, in recognition of the excellence of their doctoral theses and their contribution to advancing knowledge in oncology.
Support for translational and collaborative research
Among the funded research projects is a grant awarded to Dr. Milana Bergamino Sirvén to develop the ORQUÍDEA-PROS project, which focuses on studying mechanisms of resistance and early relapse in patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer treated with CDK4/6 inhibitors.
The call has also recognised Clínic’s leadership through a grant awarded to the SEOM Working Group on Cancer, Work and Environment, led by Dr. Laura Mezquita Pérez, for the WORKSCAN project. The initiative will explore the use of artificial intelligence-based tools to improve the identification of cancers associated with occupational exposure.
These awards reinforce the position of Clínic-IDIBAPS as one of Spain’s reference centres in oncology and reflect the impact of its commitment to research, innovation and the training of highly qualified professionals, with the ultimate goal of generating new knowledge and improving care for people with cancer.
