Four visits were organised in 2025, all related to La Marató in 2019, dedicated to rare diseases.
Two of the visits focused on a research project about brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), led by principal investigator Ramon Torné, a member of the IDIBAPS research group Cerebrovascular diseases. Visitors got the chance to explore the state-of-the-art facilities and advanced technology used in the treatment of AVMs. They were able to enter a hybrid operating room equipped with intraoperative angiography and toured the laboratory facilities where patient samples are analysed.
The other two visits were related to the project ‘PSP registry: clinical cohort study, biomarkers research and health education programme’, led by principal investigator Yaroslau Compta, a member of the IDIBAPS research group Parkinson disease and other neurodegenerative movement disorders: clinical and experimental research. Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative parkinsonism. Visitors toured the research laboratory dedicated to studying the disease and the IDIBAPS Neurological Tissue Bank (NTB), which stores samples of post-mortem neurological tissue (brain and spinal cord) and cerebrospinal fluid from over 2,300 donors.
Last year, the visits were focused on research projects targeting cancer. In 2023, four visits were arranged: two to learn about a mantle cell lymphoma research project and two devoted to a project aimed at preventing intravenous catheters from being infected.
