IDIBAPS has ranked ninth overall in the latest assessment of Catalan participation in the Horizon Europe programme (2021–2025), published by AGAUR using data from the European Commission. With a total of €38,584,445 in funding awarded, the Catalan centre of biomedical excellence ranks first in its category in terms of funding volume, among the 25 institutions included in the ranking.
Beyond the financial figures, the number of initiatives in which IDIBAPS has participated over these four years (46) is particularly noteworthy, as is the number of European projects it has taken on the role of coordinating (21). This ratio reflects researchers’ ability to submit proposals and the strength of the institute’s project management support teams in leading European research networks. These results also reflect the work of the European and International Projects Office (OPE), which comprises nine professionals with scientific backgrounds in sciences and a high degree of specialisation in securing, managing and coordinating European and international projects.
Health as a driving force
IDIBAPS’s success comes at a time of excellence for science in Catalonia, which leads Spain in attracting Horizon funding, accounting for 34% of the total awarded nationwide (€1.889 billion). Within this research ecosystem, health has established itself as one of Catalonia’s major strengths, attracting a total of €217.9 million and achieving a success rate of 4.1%. This field is surpassed only by projects in the digital, industry and space sectors (€240.4 million), and those focused on climate, energy and mobility (€235.1 million).
All this is taking place in a context in which standing out in competitive calls such as Horizon Europe is becoming increasingly difficult. These figures further establish IDIBAPS as a key strategic partner in continuing to turn competitive European funding into cutting-edge science and innovation, as well as practical solutions that benefit society as a whole.
