Scientists discover the molecular basis that explain why mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother

An international study in Nature Genetics, with the contribution of the IIBB-CSIC, reveals the molecular mechanisms that prevent mitochondrial DNA from being inherited from the father. The team discovers that spermatozoa do not have mitochondrial DNA because they block access to the mitochondria of the transcription factor essential for mitochondrial DNA replication.
