The Clínic brings together patients and specialists to discuss advances in autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases

Over 100 patients attended the meeting, where specialists from the hospital shared information on ongoing clinical trials in conditions such as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). They highlighted the development of new therapies and the importance of translational research.

The patient perspective in clinical research

One of the central themes of the meeting was the importance of incorporating the patient voice into both research and healthcare planning. The team explained the introduction of automated questionnaires via “El Meu Clínic”, a tool that will allow symptoms such as fatigue, itching (pruritus), and the emotional impact of the disease to be systematically recorded.

Dr Sergio Rodríguez Tajes focused on the impact of chronic itching associated with cholestatic diseases, a symptom that can significantly affect daily life, emotional wellbeing, social life, and work. In this context, a study was also presented to assess the impact of itching on both patients and caregivers.

New therapeutic strategies

In the therapeutic field, Dr Penelopi Arvaniti reviewed current and future treatment options for autoimmune hepatitis. Among the emerging approaches discussed were advanced immunological therapies, including T-cell engagers and CAR-T cell therapies, which are already being studied in autoimmune diseases and may provide new options for patients with refractory forms of the condition.

Another key topic was the role of physical exercise as a therapeutic tool. Dr Helena Hernández-Evole explained that more than 50% of patients with PBC experience tiredness and fatigue, and that adapted physical activity can help improve endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and emotional wellbeing.

The meeting also provided practical advice on the types of exercise, as well as how often and how intensely they should be carried out.

The meeting concluded by highlighting the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients in advancing towards more personalised care that focuses on quality of life.
