Yesterday, the Hematology Department of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona received recognition for being rated, for the eighth consecutive year, as the most reputable hematology service in Spain according to the Merco Health Reputation Monitor 2025. This distinction is part of the Merco Salud rankings, in which Clínic Barcelona was named the third-best public hospital in the country, behind La Paz and Gregorio Marañón hospitals, and the best public hospital in Catalonia.
The Head of the Hematology Department, Dr Carlos Fernández de Larrea, highlighted that this recognition is, above all, "a recognition of the team": all the people who have contributed to building the department over the years and those who, from different professional fields, make its daily activity possible. "Recognition is always a source of satisfaction, but above all it represents an opportunity to highlight the daily work, often discreet and little visible, of the many people who contribute to the progress of our specialty," he said.
According to Dr Fernández de Larrea, the distinction also reflects the department's contribution to the Campus Clínic 4CB project, a model that promotes the integration of healthcare, research, innovation and education to generate a greater impact on the health of people affected by blood disorders.
The Hematology Department shares the top national position with four other hospital departments: Digestive Diseases, Nephrology, Radiology and Urology. In addition, Clínic Barcelona has nine departments ranked second and two ranked third nationwide. In Catalonia, the hospital leads as many as 18 specialties. The monitor also places Clínic Barcelona third in the Best Communication Team category.
Merco Salud is the only independent study that analyses the reputation of the entire Spanish healthcare system. The 2025 edition is based on 11,010 surveys of physicians, nurses, patient associations, healthcare journalists, hospital managers, nursing managers, public administration representatives, hospital pharmacy leaders and pharmaceutical company executives.
