In 2025, the CEK building consumed 2,677,000 litres of water, equivalent to more than 7,300 litres per day. This figure is significantly lower than the one of the previous year, when total consumption reached 3,426,000 litres, or more than 9,300 litres per day.
This saving of more than 2,000 litres per day on average is the result of several improvements in water management, including new sign information on the different types of water available from laboratory taps; the installation of new aerators on restroom taps; adjustments to toilet flush volumes; and the replacement of pure water systems with more efficient models. One of the most notable findings is that 71% of water consumption comes from toilets and taps, accounting for more than 1.9 million litres of water each year. A further 20% is used to produce purified water for experiments, while the remaining 9% is consumed by the drinking water fountains located throughout the building.
As for the CELLEX building, water consumption in 2025 amounted to 1,560,000 litres, equivalent to 4,273 litres per day. This is also significantly lower than in previous years: consumption reached 1,716,000 litres in 2024 and 2,277,000 litres in 2023, meaning that 2025 consumption was 717,000 litres lower than in 2023.
