A computational model reveals that the brain’s molecular heterogeneity is key to neural communication

A study led by the IDIBAPS Systems Neuroscience research group has demonstrated that the uneven distribution of certain molecular receptors in the brain is not a random phenomenon, but an essential element for the coordinated functioning of brain networks. The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), show that this molecular heterogeneity contributes to optimizing the synchronization, communication and flexibility of different brain states.
