Early school leaving, the first challenge addressed
Early school leaving remains one of the major social and economic challenges for the future in Barcelona. Its effects go beyond the education system: it shapes young people’s development opportunities, social cohesion, and the city’s ability to generate the talent required by its business ecosystem.
The first collective action promoted by Board 2030 aims precisely to reduce the risk of poverty and exclusion and to increase opportunities for developing local talent, addressing one of the root causes of these challenges: early school leaving.
Supporting young people in vulnerable situations
To address this issue, Board 2030 has partnered with Fundación Exit, an organization with more than 25 years of experience dedicated to reducing early school leaving among young people in socially vulnerable situations.
During the 2025–2026 academic year, the initiative has supported 272 young people from Vocational Training and Integration Programs (PFI) in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, with the aim of preventing them from dropping out of education.
Professionals from the companies that make up Board 2030, including Hospital Clínic Barcelona, have supported these young people throughout the academic year, with the aim of helping them continue their studies by offering guidance, explaining how the labor market works, and introducing them to their companies and departments.
Without specific intervention, 40.7% of these young people do not continue studying; however, in the current academic year, thanks to the program’s support, 89% of participating students want to continue their education.
98% of volunteer professionals recommend the experience, reinforcing the role of companies as effective agents of social change. This academic year, the initiative has mobilized a joint investment of more than €510,000 and the talent of 303 corporate volunteers, who have acted as role models and mentors for the students.
Hospital Clínic’s commitment to local talent
During the event, which included testimonies from students and teachers, it was emphasized that early school leaving is not only an issue for the education system, but a shared responsibility.
In this context, the role of organizations and their ability to contribute to community well-being was highlighted, recognizing that supporting the educational development of Barcelona’s youth also helps improve their future opportunities and fosters the creation of professional talent for the city’s economic fabric.
Future areas of action
Beyond early school leaving, Board 2030 is established with the aim of promoting new collective actions in areas such as employability, housing, sustainability, and the reduction of inequalities, strengthening the role of the business sector as a key player in Barcelona’s social and economic development.
