The visits, which lasted approximately an hour and a half, allowed participants to learn about the research being carried out in one of four areas: diabetes, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), Alzheimer’s and liver cancer. The biobank was also visited, where the biological samples used in research are stored.
IDIBAPS organises numerous outreach activities to bring research closer to the public. The aim is to raise awareness of the work being done and to highlight the importance of biomedical research in improving the population’s quality of life and life expectancy.
Among others, a series of monthly talks is held at the Casa Golferichs Civic Centre in Barcelona. In addition, a scientific photography competition and exhibition are organised, along with a scientific summer camp for children from I5 to 6th grade. Visits are also promoted so that patients and their families can learn about the research being carried out into their disease, and talks are organised in educational centres.
