Research from the Clinical Institute of Medicine and Dermatology is carried out through the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), the ISGlobal (Barcelona Institute for Global Health) and, in some cases, the CIBER.
Research at IDIBAPS is carried out in the following areas:

- Autoimmune diseases
- Melanoma and Inflammatory Diseases in Dermatology
- Nutrition
- Vascular risk and aging
- Muscle diseases and congenital metabolic errors in adults
ISGlobal
- Diseases imported and related to migration and poverty
- Chagas disease
Funding for research comes mostly from competitive scholarships. A structured research mentoring program has been introduced for residents, who are offered spaces for clinical research.
On the other hand, innovation has a special relevance in ICMID. There are 62 technological and organisational innovation initiatives and several agreements and alliances have been established with leading companies.
