Hospital Clínic Barcelona will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant performed at the institution on 9 June 2026, a milestone that marked a turning point in the treatment of haematological diseases and consolidated the Hospital Clínic as a reference centre in this field.
The commemorative event will take place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Barcelona, and aims to pay tribute to the history, present and future of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation at the institution.
A journey through five decades of progress
The programme offers a retrospective look at the early days of transplantation at Hospital Clínic and its evolution over the past 50 years, highlighting the impact of this technique on improving prognosis and quality of life for patients with severe haematological diseases.
Present and future of haematopoietic transplantation
In addition to the historical perspective, the event will address current challenges and future opportunities in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, as well as its key role in research and clinical innovation. Patient participation will also provide a first-hand account of the human impact of this treatment.
A collective tribute
The event will conclude with a moment of celebration and gathering, recognising all those —healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, donors and institutions— who have made five decades of progress in this field of medicine possible.
