The measure, initially in force for 15 days, aims to protect vulnerable individuals and curb the spread of respiratory viruses.
Significant increase in respiratory infections
Over the last week, respiratory infections in Catalonia have risen by 50%, reaching an incidence rate of 1,115 cases per 100,000 inhabitants — approximately 90,000 new cases per week. Flu cases have been increasing steadily for the past six weeks, with an estimated incidence of 418 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This winter, the flu season started about four weeks earlier than usual, and the predominant strain — A(H3N2) variant K — may produce a weaker immune response. The rise in infections is particularly affecting older adults and vulnerable groups, and hospital admissions have already exceeded those recorded during the 2022–2023 season.
Mandatory masks in healthcare spaces
According to Resolution SLT/4584/2025, dated 9 December, wearing a face mask is now mandatory in all healthcare and residential facilities across Catalonia.
The rule applies to healthcare workers, patients, accompanying persons and visitors aged six and over, and covers hospitals, primary care centres, intermediate care facilities, mental health centres, and residential homes for older people and people with disabilities.
Exemptions from mask use
There are specific situations in which wearing a face mask is not required:
- Hospitalised patients when they are inside their own room.
- People with respiratory difficulties or conditions that could worsen with mask use.
- People with disabilities or dependency who cannot remove the mask on their own.
- Situations where wearing a mask is incompatible with the activity being performed, according to health advice.
Proper use and recommendations
To ensure its effectiveness, the mask must be worn correctly — it should fit well over nose, mouth and chin.
Duration of the measure
The measure will remain in effect for an initial period of 15 calendar days from its publication in the Official Bulletin of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC). The health authorities will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation before deciding whether to extend or amend the measure.
