Results of the 26 projects about heart diseases funded by the 2007 TV3 Telethon presented in an academic event

The results of the 26 research projects on heart diseases which were funded by the TV3 Telethon 2007 were presented at the 14th Symposium of the TV3 Telethon Foundation (Fundació la Marató de TV3), which took place on June 20 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. The awarded researchers exposed to the scientific community and the general public the progresses in cardiovascular risk prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the heart diseases. Among the 26 projects, which are fruits of 7 M€ invested in cardiovascular diseases, there were 6 initiatives involving researchers from IDIBAPS.

The projects were divided into three main areas. Among the basic research studies, speakers highlighted the ones about heart development in embryo, the formation of valves and the heart's electrical signal. In the field of epidemiological research, they highlighted works based on environmental and genetic factors that contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases, important studies because they could facilitate the design of preventive health policies and directly affect the quality of life of citizens. Finally, among the works led to cardiovascular therapy, the one that proposes a bioprosthesis for the myocardial scars was underlined.

The closing ceremony was conducted by the Catalan Minister of Health, Boi Ruiz, the president of the Catalan Corporation of Audiovisual Media and the TV3 Marathon Foundation, Brauli Duart, and the President of the Institute of Catalan Studies, Salvador Giner.
