The unit offers specialist care to patients referred from the Primary Care Centres (CAP) in Barcelona's Esquerra de l'Eixample district and to those referred from Adult Mental Health Centres (CSMA) throughout Catalonia. It is multidisciplinary team, consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers specialising in bipolar disorder, which conducts a thorough assessment of each case.
After this initial evaluation, a consultation is scheduled with a psychiatrist who analyses the case in depth, established the patient's needs, based on available resources, and assesses the appropriateness of pharmacological treatment. In addition, the psychiatrist may prescribe additional testing, such as blood tests, neuroimaging or psychometric evaluations, or may refer the patient to other professionals on the team according to the specific needs of each case.
The unit offers periodic follow-up for patients in Barcelona's Esquerra de l'Eixample district, as bipolar disorder requires continuous monitoring to ensure comprehensive care.
Patients referred by their local CSMA from other sectors or regions in Catalonia are given initial assessment and testing before working towards initial mood stabilisation. Once this goal is achieved, prudent follow-up is conducted to ensure consolidation of this stability. After this, a final report of the actions taken and recommendations is prepared and returned to their CSMA to continue treatment.
