Transmission of Dengue
Dengue is transmitted by bites from infected female mosquitoes of the Aedes genus.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main transmitter of the disease, although Aedes albopictus (known as the “tiger mosquito”) is also able to transmit dengue. These mosquitoes are mainly found during the day, in urban environments. These mosquitoes can also transmit other viruses, such as Zika or chikungunya. They tend to bite throughout the whole day, although they are most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Even though they can be found in any environment, the mosquitoes that transmit Dengue are typically found in residential urban areas and their surroundings.
