The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona hosted the Campus Clínic Innova 2025 Conference yesterday—an event where professionals in care, research, and management shared talent, ideas, and innovative experiences. The meeting also recognized the winning projects from the innovation call promoted by Hospital Clínic Barcelona, IDIBAPS, ISGlobal, and Món Clínic.
With a collaborative and transformative outlook, the event emphasized innovation as a driving force for change in the healthcare system, in line with the NUCLI 2025 Strategic Plan. The session was opened by Jorge Juan Fernández, Director of Innovation at Hospital Clínic Barcelona.
International inspiration to rethink the healthcare system
The day began with institutional greetings from Dr. Josep M. Campistol, General Director of Hospital Clínic Barcelona, and Dr. Susana Puig, Director of IDIBAPS. Throughout the morning, various international experts addressed key topics such as artificial intelligence in hospitals, ethics in technological adoption, advanced therapies, and digital transformation in healthcare.
International speakers who inspired the event
The Campus Clínic Innova 2025 Conference featured renowned international speakers who shared transformative visions for the future of health:
- Trine Bartholdy, Chief Business Officer at the BioInnovation Institute, opened the presentations with reflections on how to bring science to life to create strong solutions for human health.
- Lekshmy Parameswaran, co-founder of The Care Lab, presented a transformative vision of the hospitals of the future, focused on providing care beyond physical walls.
- Patrick Georgii-Hemming, Chief Medical Information Officer at Karolinska University Hospital, shared key lessons on the use of data.
- Sade Krijgsman, Clinical Informatician at Maasstad Hospital and Senior AI Consultant at Romion Health, discussed the reality of responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in hospitals.
- Oliver Patel, Head of Enterprise AI Governance at AstraZeneca, explained how to maximize AI opportunities while managing ethical and regulatory risks.
- Maria Barreira Gonzalez, Head of the Gene Editing Program at Catapult CGT UK, explored the potential of advanced therapies to reach patients.
- Thomas Hagemeijer, founder of HGM Advisory, closed the session with a talk on the strategic decisions hospitals must make regarding digital technologies.
These diverse perspectives enriched the event with innovative and actionable ideas, reinforcing Campus Clínic’s commitment to transforming the healthcare system.
Institutional dialogue to promote innovation
In the afternoon, an institutional roundtable took place with the participation of Dr. Josep M. Campistol, General Director of Hospital Clínic Barcelona; Dr. Susana Puig, General Director of IDIBAPS; Dr. Denise Naniche, Scientific Director of ISGlobal; and Mr. Jordi Carrión, Manager of the Món Clínic Foundation.
The participants reflected on the role of innovation in transforming the healthcare system and emphasized the importance of collaboration between institutions.
Projects transforming care and research
During the event, the winners of the Campus Clínic Innova 2025 call were announced, recognizing the most innovative projects in three categories, supported by the Vila Casas Foundation and iVascular.
Within the Ideas to Market program, designed for projects with transfer and commercialization potential, two categories were distinguished based on project maturity.
In the Incubate Ideas category, aimed at early-stage proposals, 13 projects were presented. Winning projects will receive €15,000 and take part in a 12-month support program led by the Teaching and Innovation Directorate.
Winning projects: NanoLynch, VISTA, and Encephalometer.
In the Accelerate Ideas category, focused on more advanced projects, eight proposals were submitted. The three winning projects will receive €30,000 and will also join the 12-month support program.
Winning projects: BIMMIA, ROBORETO, and Fetal Brain Care.
The Improving the Clínic category, centered on enhancing care processes and services within the hospital, received 23 proposals. Winning projects will receive €5,000 and the management team’s commitment to implement them within the next two years.
