Dr Laxe is currently a consultant in the Rehabilitation Service at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona and coordinator at the Clínic Institute of Medical and Surgical Specialities (ICEMEQ). In the clinical and scientific field, she has stood out for her leadership in the application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), especially in the treatment of people with traumatic brain injury.
With over two decades of experience on national and international committees and working groups, Dr Laxe has acted as an advisor to the Word Health Organization (WHO), has collaborated with scientific societies and the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists), and has played an active role in the gender and diversity study group.
She is director of the Permanent Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (SERMEF), where she has developed a cross-cutting structure for annual conferences with the aim of promoting an integrated vision of the generation of scientific evidence. Moreover, she has served as Spain’s ambassador to the ESPRM and the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM), where she represented the Europe, North Africa and Middle East region during the 2022–2024 term.
During the last joint meeting of the General Assembly of the ESPRM and the UEMS, Dr Laxe received majority support in a very competitive vote, enabling her to be elected as the incoming president for the period 2025-2027. She will subsequently take up the presidency during the 2027-2031 term.
This appointment represents outstanding recognition of her career and reinforces the Hospital Clínic’s leadership in the field of rehabilitation at the European level.
