The use of dietary supplements and herbal products has increased significantly in recent years, driven by the perception that “natural” products are beneficial to health. Their popularity has grown thanks to online advertising and the expansion of specialised shops. However, many of these products are not as harmless as is often thought, especially for patients with liver conditions.
A silent danger to the liver
Patients with liver disease may regularly use these products without being aware of the risks they may pose. This is particularly concerning, as the liver is the organ responsible for metabolising many of the components found in these supplements, some of which have been associated with cases of hepatotoxicity.
The so-called HDS (Herbal and Dietary Supplements) include a wide variety of products, such as vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, etc. Although some may have proven beneficial effects, many haven’t been thoroughly studied to guarantee their safety. Furthermore, patients often fail to report their consumption during medical visits.
