The Clínic, a centre of excellence in transplantation
In 2025, the Hospital Clínic Barcelona performed a total of 294 organ transplants, of which 184 were kidney, 70 liver, 17 heart and 23 pancreas, consolidating its position as the Catalan hospital with the highest number of liver transplants. The Clínic also participated in 8 paediatric transplants carried out by surgical teams at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital.
In parallel, the Clínic managed 40 deceased donors (7 brain death and 33 asystole), a figure that demonstrates the robustness of the centre's donation and coordination system. During 2025, the Clínic consolidated its organ donation programme within the context of the assisted dying procedure, with 5 effective donors.
With regard to tissues, the Hospital Clínic Barcelona managed 234 cadaveric tissue donations. In the field of haematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation, the Clínic is the second most active centre in Catalonia, with a total of 105 transplants performed.
Catalonia, a leader in transplantation activity
In 2025, 1,356 organ transplants were performed in Catalonia, an increase of 0.8% on the previous year, with a rate of 167 transplants per million population. Across the region, 945 kidney transplants, 206 liver transplants, 68 heart transplants, 110 lung transplants and 27 pancreas transplants were carried out, figures that consolidate Catalonia as one of the leading territories in this field.
A successful model based on coordination
The high level of activity achieved during 2025 at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona is the result of a fully consolidated donation and transplantation coordination model, which has operated cross-departmentally and continuously within the centre since 1985.
This model integrates professionals from various departments and allows for the early detection of donors, efficient management of processes, and an agile and rigorous response in high-complexity situations. Close coordination with OCATT and the National Transplant Organization (ONT) ensures equity, traceability and the highest quality throughout the entire process, positioning the Clínic as a centre of excellence in the field of transplantation.
Dr Ángel Ruiz, Head of the Donation and Transplantation Coordination Section at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona, highlights that the activity recorded during 2025 “demonstrates the solidity of a model based on networking, the involvement of professionals from multiple departments and a highly specialized organization.” He explains that “the good results achieved are also the result of public trust and the altruistic gesture of the donors and their families.”
“The volume and quality of this year's transplant activity consolidate the Clínic's position as a centre of excellence and reflect a continued commitment to innovation, coordination and patient-centred care, with the aim of offering advanced and equitable therapeutic responses,” concludes Dr Ruiz.
