Teaching and Training - Unit of Alzheimer's and Other Cognitive Disorders
Teaching and training activities are also one of the cornerstones of the Unit. Through the various actions led by the UATC, the aim is to enhance clinical training and research into neurodegenerative dementias for all levels of healthcare professionals in training. At the same time, it works to promote continuous, internal and external training and to facilitate knowledge of neurodegenerative dementias among the general public.
Undergraduate training
Training in neurodegenerative dementias as part of the course on Nervous System Diseases in the 4th year of the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona.
Postgraduate degrees
- Resident training: Neurology residents from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona carry out a 2-month rotation at the UATC. The UATC also participates in the teaching of psychiatry, psychology and family medicine residents. Every year residents from other centres, both national and international, also stay at the UATC.
- Postgraduate training: Members of the UATC coordinate the specialization in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative dementias as part of the Master's degree in Advanced Medical Skills at the University of Barcelona. It collaborates in the Master's Degree in Neuroscience at the UB and in the Master's Degree in Neuropsychology at the UAB. It also offers a 12-month advanced training course entitled "Neurodegenerative Dementias”.
- Since 2023, the ‘Early-onset Dementias’ conference has been held for all professionals interested in training in this field.
Training and conferences dedicated to patients and family members
Within the UATC there is the APRENDEM programme, run by the advanced practice nurse, which aims to train, promote the health and maintain the autonomy of people with dementia and their carers.
The annual World Alzheimer's Day and the annual World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week are celebrated every year. Likewise, an annual cycle of informative talks entitled ‘ELS DIMECRES AL CLÍNIC BARCELONA PARLEM DE LA DEMÈNCIA’ (‘ON WEDNESDAYS AT THE CLÍNIC BARCELONA LET’S TALK ABOUT DEMENTIA’) has started.
Continuing education
The UATC holds a weekly clinical and scientific session that is open to professionals from other interested centres. It also participates periodically in the general sessions carried out by the Neurology Department and occasionally in other sessions at the Hospital Clínic. A weekly clinical and scientific session is also held at the neurodegenerative diseases day hospital.
Throughout the year, members of the UATC participate in many continuing education sessions organized by different scientific societies, patient associations and civic organizations. Likewise, members of the UATC regularly participate in the main national and international congresses related to dementia.
