Teaching - Unit of Schizophrenia
The teaching and training activities of the Schizophrenia Unit aim to provide an optimal transfer of knowledge about schizophrenia and related disorders at undergraduate, postgraduate and specialized training levels. The Unit also collaborates in both theoretical and practical teaching in the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences.
Undergraduate Degrees
It participates in and/or coordinates part of the training of students doing a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine:
- Psychiatry course (4th year)
- Optional course in Therapeutic Psychiatry (4th year)
- General Semiology and Clinical Propaedeutics. Medical Ethics (3rd year)
- Optional course in Translational Medicine (3rd year). Translational Medicine in Schizophrenia
- Medical Psychology course (2nd year)
- Summer Internship (4th year)
- Hospital Clinical Placements (6th year)
The Unit also coordinates the Biological Bases of Mental Disorders module in the Molecular Pathology of Organs and Systems (PMOS II) course of the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences.
Postgraduate Degrees
The Unit forms part of the following master’s degrees:
- Master's Degree in Neurosciences. Inter-university master’s degree. Subjects: Biological Psychiatry, Cognition and Neuroimaging
- Inter-University Master's Degree in Initiation to Mental Health Research . Subject: Advances in Schizophrenia
- Master's Degree in General Health Psychology . Intervention in Neuropsychology
- Master's Degree in Clinical Research within the Systems Medicine module
- Master's Degree in Translational Medicine-MSc. Topics: Schizophrenia, what can we learn from Translational studies; Clinical Psychiatry
Specialization in Psychiatry and other specializations
Training of medical residents (MIRs) in Psychiatry, psychology residents (PIRs) in Psychology and nursing residents (EIRs) in nursing and other MIR specializations (Neurology, Family and Community Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology, etc.).
Training placements in the Schizophrenia Unit, mainly for residents from other national and international centres.
Two sessions are held each month, one informative and one educational, on updates and hot topics related to the disease (Monthly Seminar), given by members of the Unit and residents in training.
Over the last 10 years, the Unit has organized an annual international educational initiative focused on relapse prevention: CERP Programme (Centres of Excellence for Relapse Prevention in Schizophrenia) aimed at foreign psychiatrists, especially those from Europe, South America and Asia. POST-APA (American Psychiatric Association) conferences and other accredited continuing education courses are also organized. Refractory Schizophrenia and Clozapine; Evolution and Intervention in the Early Stages of Acute Schizophrenia and Clinical Psychopharmacology Course in Schizophrenia. Most of these activities have been carried out in close collaboration with the Aula Clínic.
Over the last five years, seven doctoral theses, 10 master’s degree final projects, three final projects for the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and one for the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedicine have been read.
