Teaching and training - Unit of Pulmonary hypertension
Teaching is a fundamental pillar of the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit (HP) at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona, which is committed to training highly skilled professionals in the diagnosis, treatment and comprehensive management of PH. The unit actively participates in undergraduate teaching, especially in the fields of medicine and nursing, as well as in postgraduate and continuing education programmes for residents and external professionals, which strengthens its position as a centre of excellence in this field.
In the field of university education, the unit collaborates in the training of students at the University of Barcelona (UB) in the undergraduate degree programme in medicine. The unit’s teaching staff, including Dr Joan Albert Barberà and Dr Isabel Blanco, teach key topics such as pulmonary embolism and PH in the Respiratory System Diseases course. In addition, the unit offers clinical practice to medical students, familiarizing them with the clinical and therapeutic aspects of PH and preparing future professionals with direct experience in this complex pathology.
The unit also excels in the training of MIR doctors (specialty registrars), particularly in the specialty of Pulmonology. Residents who rotate through the unit acquire advanced skills, such as performing pulmonary haemodynamic studies, and become some of the best-trained specialists in the field of PH in Spain. Moreover, the unit regularly welcomes MIR doctors from other specialities and centres interested in specific rotations in PH, as well as international professionals on training stays.
The unit also promotes continuing education for other healthcare professionals through specialized courses, such as the “National Course on Nursing Care for Patients with PH”, a benchmark in Spain for training in the management of this disease. The unit also participates actively in master’s degrees and specialization courses, aimed at pulmonologists, cardiologists, internists and nurses. These training activities, in addition to updating professionals on the latest advances and treatments, reinforce the unit’s commitment to teaching excellence and advancing knowledge of pulmonary hypertension.
