Hearing Loss research at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Research on hearing loss is conducted primarily at IDIBAPS, specifically in the Respiratory, Cardiovascular, and Renal Biopathology and Bioengineering Area and the Clinical and Experimental Respiratory Immunoallergy (IRCE) group.

The main lines of research include patients with an autoimmune disorder that can cause sudden hearing loss (e.g., Sjögren syndrome, lupus erythematosus and Cogan’s syndrome) and patients with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection.

Researches are also working on the development of new surgical technique for the treatment of middle ear diseases, such as endoscopic approaches. This new technique limits incisions, and therefore allows patients to recover more quickly. Dr. Larrosa leads an annual course on ear endoscopy.

Dr. Caballero has coordinated the Autoimmune Disease Committee of the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and is currently a member of the society's Research Committee.
