Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea at the Clínic

Patients with suspected breathing disorders during sleep are referred to Clínic Barcelona. Their initial visit is to the Pulmonology Department, where a clinical history and physical examination are performed and the degree of diagnostic suspicion established. The type of sleep study requested depends on clinical suspicion and associated pathology. Once the sleep test has been carried out (either in the hospital or at home), the study is coded, the results are explained to the patient and possible therapeutic options are assessed. After the treatment has started, follow-up visits are arranged to monitor progress.

Every year, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment is started for over 600 patients. We complete 2500 sleep studies each year, both in patients’ homes and at the hospital. Similarly, we carry out 2000 CPAP follow-up visits in the specialised adaptation consultation sessions while monitoring treatment.

The Clinic Barcelona sleep laboratory is a pioneer of the multidisciplinary approach to treatment; emphasising education and CPAP training for patients, as well as the validation of diagnostic methods and automatic CPAP machines to optimise sleep apnoea management.

The Clínic was reaccredited by the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) as an expert multidisciplinary sleep unit and as an excellent non-invasive home ventilation unit in 2023.
