Evoked Potentials at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Patients are referred to the Nervous System Functional Testing Unit by hospital specialists or primary care physicians (e.g., in neurology, neurosurgery, traumatology/orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, cardiac surgery or internal medicine).

Patients whose functional neurological pathways may be affected or at risk during surgery are referred to the Nervous System Functional Testing Unit for a preoperative evoked potential study before any surgery.

This study uses evoked potential testing to facilitate planning for intraoperative monitoring and can also detect possible preoperative impairments which may be minimally symptomatic.

After surgery, an assessment is made to determine whether the patient requires evoked potential testing and/or neurological follow-up.
