Teaching and Training - Thoracic Surgery Service
In the field of Teaching, the team of thoracic surgeons teach both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and also provide specialized health training. It pays special attention to the continuous education of members of the Department, to ensure they are kept up to date with constant surgical developments. It also participates in and organizes national and international congresses. The thoracic surgery staff are linked to the Department of Surgery and Medical-Surgical Specialties with two permanent professors and four medical associate professors.
More specifically, the Thoracic Surgery Department leads the following teaching and training activities:
Degrees
The Department carries out the theoretical and practical teaching of the subject of the Respiratory System to the 4th Year Students of the Medicine Degree at the University of Barcelona.
The Department is involved in teaching part of the Official Master’s Degree in Advanced Skills, with the specialty of Advanced Thoracic Surgery. This is a face-to-face, multidisciplinary master’s degree, where the speciality of thoracic surgery is updated from a practical point of view, updating the most frequent pathology.
It offers the Higher University Course on the Principles of Thoracic Robotic Surgery, as specific postgraduate training in robotic surgery.
It also offers fellowships and specific observerships throughout the year.
It lasts for five years, with external rotations included.
Master's
The Department has organized the specialty of Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer, within the Master of Advanced Medical Skills of the University of Barcelona since 2012, with one or two students each year. It is a face-to-face and multidisciplinary Master's degree, rotating through the different specialties involved in lung cancer, such as Medical Oncology, Radiotherapy Oncology, Pneumology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiodiagnostics, Pathological Anatomy and Thoracic Surgery.
Continuing education
All members of the Department, both medical and nursing staff, carry out continuous training with assistance and presentation of communications at various national and international conferences.

- Joint meeting on Thoracic Surgery since 2009.
- Monthly session of the Thoracic Tumors Unit.
- Biweekly bibliographic service session.
- Session of the monthly research service.
- Annual session of the Mortality Service.
- Weekly clinical session of the Respiratory Institute.
- Weekly scientific session of the Respiratory Institute.
