Diagnosis of Endometrial Cancer

Reading time: 1 min

Anybody with any suspicious sign or symptom should go for a gynaecology consultation and assessment. Diagnosis begins with a clinical interview and a physical examination. The following diagnostic tests may also be ordered:

Gynecological ecography

Vaginal ultrasound: Insertion of an ultrasound probe through the vagina to measure the thickness of the endometrium.

Endometrial Biopsis by Aspiration

Endometrial aspiration biopsy: For blind biopsies of the endometrium which can be done in outpatient clinics.

Endometrial Biopsis by Aspiration

Hysteroscopy with biopsy: Insertion of a small camera inside the uterus for a direct view of the endometrium and for taking targeted biopsies. This can be performed under local anaesthesia or under sedation in the operating room. It is an outpatient procedure.

Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, further tests, such as an MRI scan or a CT scan may be carried out to determine the extent of the disease and plan treatment. A blood test may also be requested. Research is also currently being carried out into the molecular characteristics of the tumour, helping to select more targeted treatments.
