Care for patients undergoing cardiac ablation at the Clínic

Reading time: 2 min

The Arrhythmia Section at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona provides comprehensive care for patients with heart rhythm disorders, from initial diagnosis through to treatment and follow-up.

The process usually begins with an assessment in the cardiology outpatient clinic, where a cardiologist specialising in arrhythmias reviews the patient’s case and requests the necessary tests, such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter monitoring or cardiac imaging.

Some patients may be referred directly from their local hospital for a cardiac ablation procedure. In these situations, the Clínic team coordinates evaluation and treatment with professionals at the referring centre to ensure continuity of care.

Hospital Clínic Barcelona is also a referral centre for the treatment of complex arrhythmias and receives patients from other hospitals for highly specialised procedures.

When cardiac ablation is considered appropriate, the patient is given detailed information about the procedure and the intervention is scheduled.

After the procedure, a structured follow-up is performed in the Arrhythmia Section outpatient unit. This may include medical visits, electrocardiogram (ECG) or Holter monitoring and, in some cases, cardiac imaging tests.

In certain cases, follow-up care may be coordinated with the medical team at the patient’s local hospital, particularly in more straightforward procedures, so that some of the check-ups can be carried out closer to home.

The Section also provides specific follow-up programmes for certain arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, with the involvement of cardiologists and specialised nursing staff.

In many cases, the patient may be discharged on the same day as the procedure, with follow-up telephone contact from the nursing team if required.

The Hospital Clínic Arrhythmia Section is a center that performs a large number of procedureswith access to advanced diagnostic, cardiac mapping and ablation technologies, enabling both routine procedures and highly complex cases to be managed.
