Research - A&E Department
Research is an essential activity within the A&E Department, as it enables advances in knowledge and improvements in both patient care and the organization of the service, with a direct impact on the quality of patient care.
Research activity focuses on the in-depth study of the processes and conditions specific to the A&E Department setting. This includes the analysis of all the conditions and situations likely to prompt an A&E Department consultation, with the aim of generating new areas of knowledge, promoting innovation and fostering scientific dissemination.
The clinical pathways managed in the A&E Department are unique and distinct, and researching these situations contributes to a deeper and more integrated understanding. The improvements in knowledge resulting from this activity have direct implications for:
- Clinical practice: Optimizing the diagnosis and treatment of the most common and complex conditions.
- Organization of the department: Designing more efficient pathways and protocols tailored to the actual needs of the population served.
A key priority of our research work is the integration of the gender perspective, to ensure that differences in the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and progression of urgent conditions are analysed in accordance with a patient’s sex and gender. This also applies to geriatric emergency medicine. This approach makes it possible to provide more equitable and personalized care, ensuring that the interventions are tailored to the specific needs of each patient.
Research in the A&E Department is channelled through the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), in the following area:
And more specifically within the A&E Department group: processes and pathologies.
The main lines of research include:
- Functional aspects of hospital A&E departments
- Clinical aspects of poisoning
- Urgent medical care for issues resulting from substance misuse
- Treatment of arrhythmias in the A&E department
- Assessment of chest pain in the A&E department
- Promotion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training among the general public
- Acute heart failure
- Management of infectious diseases in the A&E department
- Dynamics of teaching and research in the A&E department
In short, research in the A&E Department not only contributes to advancing scientific knowledge but also has a significant impact on the quality of care and the satisfaction of both patients and healthcare professionals. Moreover, the group has promoted the creation of national and international networks, which are highly relevant in a world where multidisciplinary and team-based work is essential.
