Surgical Area
The Surgical Area is a cross-functional area of the hospital where the entire surgical process is managed. It is an area that reports to the Medical Directorate and employs more than 700 professionals from different fields (medical, nursing, and administrative). The values that guide its practice are humanism (respect, participation, and trust), interdisciplinary collaboration, scientific rigor, and excellence.
The spirit of the Surgical Area is to serve patients who require surgery or a procedure with the indispensable support of the Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department. It includes the activity of all operating theatres and all interventional areas where anaesthetic procedures are performed.
The Department manages facilities located at three sites: Villarroel, Plató, and Maternitat. It has more than 40 operating theatres, including their respective recovery units, a hybrid angioradiology operating theatre, and another specifically for intraoperative radiotherapy. It has modern equipment and state-of-the-art facilities in all operating theatres, including different robot-assisted platforms, specific visualization systems (high-resolution microscopes, exoscopes), monitoring, and intraoperative ultrasound. It also has a Day 0 admission area, a surgical ICU with 13 beds for critical patients and 8 for semi-critical patients, fully digitized, and a Pain Clinic with an interventional room for the most complex procedures.
The Surgical Area uses the Lean-Estimtrack system, based on machine learning techniques and historical data, to improve the flow of activity, provide real-time information to patients' families, and coordinate between professionals throughout the surgical process. This programme improves the quality of care for users and increases efficiency throughout the surgical process, providing data and indicators that enable performance improvements. It also involves an evolution in the working model, moving towards the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) by the entire chain of personnel involved in the process.
The Surgical Area also carries out the sterilization process for all the material used in the hospital wards, operating theatres, interventional areas, and outpatient clinics.
The Area works in close collaboration with the Biomedical Diagnostic Centre (CDB: clinical analysis laboratory, pathological anatomy, microbiology, etc.) and the Diagnostic Imaging Centre (CDI: Radiology, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, etc.).
