Organization - Surgical Area

The Anaesthesia, Resuscitation, and Pain Management Department operates within the Surgical Area and strives to become an international benchmark for surgical care and perioperative medicine.

Perioperative medicine includes preoperative preparation, intraoperative management, and postoperative care of patients. This better reflects the full scope of the activities of the Anaesthesia Department, placing special emphasis on patient safety and quality of care throughout the surgical process, from preparation to recovery. In this regard, the Area has devoted considerable effort to improving these aspects in order to achieve the highest standards for our patients.

The Surgical Area follows all the quality and safety protocols and recommendations set by CatSalut and works in coordination with all the institutes of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. It carries out its activities through the following facilities:

  • Outpatient consultation for pre-anaesthesia assessment and optimization
  • Day 0 admission
  • Scheduled surgery operating theatres (except paediatrics)
  • Major outpatient surgery (MOS) operating theatres
  • Emergency surgery operating theatres
  • Post-anaesthetic care units (PACUs)
  • Surgical ICU
  • Pain Clinic

The Area has the following accreditations:
