Anaesthesia Department Service
The Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Pain Management is part of the Surgical Area of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. It is an innovative clinical department, a pioneer in research, and an international benchmark of excellence in Anesthesiology.
The main objectives of the department are:
-
To guarantee the performance of all therapeutic and/or diagnostic surgical procedures, both urgent and scheduled, as well as any other techniques requiring the collaboration of the anesthesiologist to improve patient comfort and increase procedural effectiveness.
-
To oversee the postoperative recovery of all patients, across varying levels of complexity.
-
To ensure the management of acute and chronic pain.
-
To consistently provide quality and safe patient care with the highest level of professional commitment.
The department carries out its clinical work in five main areas:
-
Preoperative assessment and optimization unit (Prehabilitation).
-
Surgical procedures:
-
Scheduled inpatient surgery: procedures that, due to their complexity or the need for postoperative care, must be performed in the hospital.
-
Emergency surgery.
-
Outpatient (ambulatory) and short-stay surgery.
-
Minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
-
-
Obstetric care (analgesia and anesthesia for labor and/or surgery).
-
Critical Care (immediate care for critically ill patients and in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit – SICU).
What are we dealing with?
Know the team
The Department of Anesthesiology is made up of 113 specialist physicians (distributed across the seven sections mentioned, all with full-time dedication) and 24 resident physicians (MIR) who are fully incorporated into the department at the end of their first year of training.
The high medical-surgical complexity of the Hospital requires the subspecialization of activities and also makes it necessary for each section to be self-managed, in order to cover both specific clinical tasks and those related to research and teaching.
