The Microbiology Service is part of the Biomedical Diagnostic Center of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. The Service provides effective information for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases of infectious origin. The latest scientific advances in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology are used, as well as classical culture methodologies, antibiograms, serology and others. It also uses the latest generation of techniques in molecular biology, such as amplification, detection, quantification, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of nucleic acids.

The Service is structured as follows:

  • Bacteriology, Parasitology and Mycology Section
  • Virology Section
  • Emergency Laboratory
  • Microbiome Area and Microbiota Bank of Catalonia: Clínic Headquarters

The Service's professionals work transversally with all clinical and diagnostic specialties, aiming to provide the best possible care to patients. In 2022, the Service received the Francisco Soria Melguizo Award for Best Microbiology Service in Spain, in recognition of its strong commitment to research and high-quality care.
