Organization - Neurology Service
The Neurology Deparment participates in the following Units:
The professionals in the Headache and Facial Pain Group treat one of the most common reasons for consultation, which can affect up to 14% of the general population.
The Neurology Department also offers specific care for patients with dysautonomia, motor neuron diseases, genetic neuropathies, muscular dystrophies, or peripheral complications from various treatments, such as oncological treatments.
Nervous System Functional Testing Section
The functional testing section of the nervous system is responsible for performing diagnostic tests such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), evoked potentials (EP) and tests for the study of sleep (PSG, MSLT/MWT, etc.). In addition, it is responsible for intraoperative monitoring, which allows various types of surgery, mainly brain and spinal cord surgery, to be performed with greater safety.
All neurological processes not included in any of the units or processes described are included in general neurology care. In addition to hospital care, the Department provides primary neurological care at 13 primary care centres. The Neurology Department also coordinates the day hospital for neurodegenerative diseases located on Carrer Reina Amàlia. This centre treats patients with neurodegenerative dementias, Parkinson's disease, chronic multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It runs cognitive intervention, physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy programmes, as well as support workshops for patient carers.
