Research - Unit of Gynaecological Oncology

The Gynaecological Oncology Unit at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona is committed to research, and its main objectives are to investigate the mechanisms of tumour development and premalignant lesions, in order to make progress in early diagnosis and the search for more effective therapies.

Different members of the Unit carry out research work at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) as part of the “Gynaecology, Human Reproduction and Women’s Health” programme, with a particular focus on the following lines of research:

  1. Targeted surgical treatment and improvement of quality of life in gynaecological cancers, which explores the impact of multimodal rehabilitation on surgical outcomes, sentinel node strategies and the function of lymphadenectomy in cancer staging.
  2. Human papillomavirus (HPV) and prevention which aims to characterize HPV infections with a risk of progression, as well as high-risk patient groups that would benefit from primary or secondary prevention tools.

The Unit’s research is also disseminated through other organizations such as the Clínic Group associated with the Thematic Network for Cancer Research at the Carlos III Health Institute, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Spanish Gynaecological Cancer Research Group (GEICO), GCIG (Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup), National Cancer Institute (USA), among others.
