Unit of Gynaecological Oncology
The Gynaecological Oncology Unit forms part of the Clínic Institute of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Neonatology (ICGON). Its main objective is to provide a complete, comprehensive response to patients with gynaecological cancers, offering multidisciplinary and cross-cutting care in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up within a highly competitive organizational model.
The functional structure of the Unit is patient-centred, bringing together experts from various specialties with the common goal of ensuring the best possible care. In addition to its healthcare role, the Unit aims to be a leader in teaching and research.
The Gynaecological Oncology Unit is made up of professionals in the specialties that participate in the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancers: Gynaecology (ICGON), Medical Oncology (ICMHO), Radiation Oncology (ICMHO), Diagnostic Radiology (CDI), Nuclear Medicine (CDI) and Anatomical Pathology (CDB). It also collaborates with specialists in other areas such as: General and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, Tumour Markers, Haemostasis, etc.
Gynaecological oncology includes a specific area of knowledge and requires a high level of specialization. In many countries, it is recognized as a subspecialty in its own right, requiring both theoretical training and surgical practice. Our Unit offers services in five main physical areas:
- Gynaecological oncology outpatient clinic
- Cervical and vulvar pathology outpatient clinic
- Outpatient diagnostic and surgical procedures area
- Operating theatres for conventional and major outpatient surgery, and a radio operating theatre for intraoperative radiotherapy
- Hospitalization (area common to the entire Service)
The functional areas are structured according to the type of activity and the disease treated in the Unit. There are two functional areas according to the stage of the care process:
- Gynaecological Oncology
- Prevention of gynaecological cancer (screening, detection and treatment of pre-malignant lesions of the lower genital tract)
The Unit has been consolidated as a centre of excellence, at both national and international levels. Thanks to the advanced surgical activity and the comprehensive oncological treatment (medical and radiotherapeutic), it one of main referral centres in Catalonia and Spain. It recently obtained accreditation in ‘advanced ovarian cancer surgery’ from the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), which is awarded to centres that demonstrate a high volume of cases treated and optimal levels of surgical care, showing specific skills, experience, organization and multidisciplinary dedication.
Moreover, scientific productivity and advances in research position the Unit as a leader in the field.
