The Medical Oncology Department is part of the Institute of Cancer and Blood Diseases (ICAMS) at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

Over the last 10 years, the Department has experienced exponential growth and improved resource optimization, with the aim of integrating innovation and the latest advances in precision medicine into healthcare. This enables us to offer a better response to the treatment of people with cancer.

The Department is organized based on a multidisciplinary model and with specialized oncology areas, with interconnected healthcare teams. Recently, the Department was recognized as the Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Centre (4CB), consolidating its position as a national and international centre of excellence. This recognition commits us to ensuring patient access to the latest scientific and technological advances.

The Department’s strategic objective focuses on innovative management and comprehensive care for people with cancer, from diagnosis to the cure or control of the disease.

Healthcare

The healthcare model focuses on the person with cancer as the backbone of healthcare activity. It is organized in accordance with the patient's needs, addressing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, symptom control and short- and long-term follow-up. To ensure specialized care, the Department has teams made up of specialists in different areas of knowledge, each led by a head of pathology group and section heads.

Cancer Support Area

The Medical Oncology Department actively participates in the ICAMS Cancer Support Area and has various facilities for healthcare:

  • Acute Hospitalization: Care for patients requiring hospital admission, based in Villarroel and Sagrat Cor.
  • Outpatient Emergency Care Facility: Emergency care for patients with levels of severity that can be treated outside the Hospital A&E Department.
  • Outpatient Home Care Unit: A team of doctors and nurses who visit and treat patients at home.
  • 24/7 Telephone and In-Person Care: On-call and in-person medical service for cancer patients.
  • Palliative Care Unit: Specialized care for patients requiring palliative care.
  • Onco-Geriatrics Unit: Specific care for elderly cancer patients.

Day Hospital

The Day Hospital is a facility specializing in the administration of oncological treatments for patients who do not require hospital admission. It has units in Villarroel and Plató, offering structured and coordinated care to ensure the best management of systemic treatments (chemotherapy, biologics, blood transfusions, etc.).

Outpatient Department

Outpatient Departments are areas dedicated to the assessment, treatment and follow-up of cancer patients, located at the Villarroel and Plató sites. They are the first point of contact with the oncology team and allow patients to be referred to different units and departments according to their needs. Visits can be in person, by telephone or by video call.
