Prognosis of Anxiety Disorders

Reading time: 1 min

The progression of anxiety disorders is influenced by a variety of factors. However, in most cases, an appropriate treatment can lead to a substantial reduction in symptoms and the associated distress. While the concept of “cure” is not typically used in mental health contexts, some people improve significantly with treatment to the point where anxiety is no longer a major problem for the rest of their life. Once an anxiety disorder has been identified and diagnosed, it is generally recommended to begin treatment as early as possible. That said, treatment can still be highly effective even for those who have been living with anxiety for many years.

Most anxiety disorders begin during childhood or adolescence, which makes it especially important for young people to have access to appropriate treatments.
Once symptoms have improved, it is important to focus on preventing any relapses. This implies that the final phase of treatment should focus on identifying any difficulties or symptoms that may appear once treatment has ended, so that the person can face and overcome them.
