Prevention of hantavirus infection

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid contact with rodents and their excreta.

Preventive measures

  • Ventilation of enclosed spaces for at least 30 minutes before cleaning.
  • Moistening contaminated surfaces with disinfectant before sweeping or vacuuming.
  • The use of gloves and, if necessary, a mask.
  • Storage of food in sealed containers.
  • Sealing cracks and holes in homes and storage areas.
  • Removal of food waste and potential rodent shelters.

In endemic areas

In regions where the virus circulates, such as certain areas of Chile and Argentina, extra precautions should be taken in cabins, campsites and poorly ventilated rural spaces.
