Neonatology research at the Hospital Clínic is integrated into the Foetal and Perinatal Medicine Group at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), in the liver, digestive system and metabolism area. The Neonatology Department at the Hospital Clínic,​​ in collaboration with the Neonatology Department at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, within the framework of the SAMID Network,​​ has several competitive research projects with stable funding as a research group.

The overall objective of the research activity carried out at the Neonatology Department is to promote knowledge of prenatal and perinatal diseases with a potential impact on childhood and adult life. The main lines of current research are as follows:

  • Neonatal neurology
  • Prematurity
  • Nutrition, breastfeeding and microbiome
  • Prenatal exposure to alcohol
  • Perinatal environmental health
  • Perinatal infection/inflammation
  • Pulmonary imaging techniques and respiratory pathology
  • Cord blood transfusion

The Department’s professionals participate in collaborations aimed at promoting innovation, valorization, the transfer and effective application of research and development results. Innovation projects include the development of accessible technologies for low-income countries, customized devices for premature babies and advanced solutions such as video laryngoscopes and 3D masks for neonatal care.
