  • Ischemic stroke

    Directed by Ángel Chamorro

Our research focuses on cerebral microcirculation, particularly microvascular reperfusion failure (no-reflow” phenomenon) after ischemic stroke. I integrate clinical trials and mechanistic studies using advanced imaging to understand tissue-level perfusion and therapeutic response following thrombectomy. My work includes investigating intra-arterial thrombolytics (CHOICE and CHOICE-2 trials) and antioxidant strategies (AURORA trial) to improve microvascular flow and neurological outcomes.

  • The immune system in stroke

    Directed by Anna M. Planas

We study immune responses after stroke, from local brain reactions to systemic effects in peripheral organs. Our work focuses on brain–immune interfaces, stroke‑induced immunodepression, and secondary neurological and cardiovascular sequelae. Using single‑cell approaches, we analyze microglia, and leukocyte phenotypes and functions, and their temporal and spatial dynamics during lesion progression, with a translational aim to validate findings in patient samples and identify therapeutic targets.

  • Brain hemorrhage

    Directed by Sergi Amaro

This line investigates hemorrhagic stroke, including subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracerebral hemorrhage. Research integrates advanced MRI biomarkers of blood-brain barrier disruption and glymphatic dysfunction, fluid biomarkers for risk stratification, and minimally invasive neurosurgical approaches, aiming to identify therapeutic targets and develop intervention studies to improve long-term functional and cognitive outcomes.
