Symptoms of Back Pain

Back pain can vary greatly depending on its cause and severity. The most common symptoms include:

Low back pain

Persistent or intermittent pain in the spine, from the cervical region to the lumbosacral area, which may present either centrally or one side.

Throbbing pain in the back with a lightning bolt

Pain that begins or worsens with physical activity, or even with walking, sitting or lying in the same position for long periods.

Pain radiating into the limbs. In cases of cervical pain, this may spread to the shoulders or arms, sometimes reaching the hands. In cases of lumbar pain, it may radiate into the buttocks, groin or legs (as with sciatica), and can extend as far as the toes. Radiating pain may also be accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness.

Pain with stiffness or difficulty moving, often making it hard to get out of bed or a chair, or to bend forwards.

Pain that improves with stretching and rest.

It is important to remember that the symptoms of back pain can vary according to the underlying cause. The conditions most commonly associated with back pain include muscle problems, herniated discs, arthritis, sciatica, poor posture or injuries.
