Telemedicine. The use of information and communication technologies means patients can be seen in their homes. The healthcare team connects with the patient through their computer and they hold a clinical interview to ask them about their daily weight and vital signs. Based on the results, they may change your medication or decide you require a more comprehensive check-up at the hospital. Therefore telemedicine reduces the number of unnecessary hospital stays and appointments, while also improving patient care and management.
Stem cell therapy. An infarction (heart attack) produces necrosis, i.e., cell death, in the myocardial tissue and the cells alone do not regenerate; therefore, that area of the heart stops working. In this context, research into the administration of multipotent stem cells at the site of the infarction could improve the functionality of the damaged area. Initial animal studies have returned some very promising results.
Total Artificial Heart (TAH). A TAH comprises four chambers that simulate and can be used to replace a natural heart. It involves a procedure similar to a transplant, but using an artificial heart. The technique has not yet been approved in Spain and more studies are required to confirm its effectiveness.
