Can postpartum psychosis be cured?

  • With appropriate treatment, many women make a full recovery.
  • Ongoing follow-up is important, especially when planning future pregnancies.
  • There is a risk of recurrence, but appropriate medical care and preventive treatment can help reduce the risk.

Risk of relapse

  • The estimated risk of experiencing another episode is 30–50%.
  • The risk may be higher if:
    • There is a family history of bipolar disorder.
    • The patient has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
    • The patient has previously experienced more than one episode of postpartum psychosis.
    • Preventive treatment is not provided.
