Throughout her career, she has promoted pioneering projects in imaging, artificial intelligence and real-life data applied to glaucoma, and is currently leading the FIS BEGAS project, focused on screening for the disease through retinography and AI-based tools in primary care.
With over 50 publications in international journals and constant participation in leading congresses, Dr Pazos is also co-editor of the clinical guidelines of the European Glaucoma Society (2025), and editor of the glaucoma section of the journal Eye and of the Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (Archives of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology). Since 2020, she has been a member of the Executive Committee of the European Glaucoma Society, where she is currently assistant secretary.
The strategic project promoted by Dr Pazos as director is based on four main areas: excellence in care, research and innovation, teaching, and management. In general terms, as the new director, Dr Marta Pazos will guide the Clínic Ophthalmology Institute towards efficient, participative and sustainable clinical management, with dynamic executive teams, a balanced scorecard and economic planning that guarantees the responsible use of resources. It also prioritizes humanization and shared leadership, fostering transparency, teamwork and the attraction and retention of high-level talent.
The strategic plan also emphasizes digitalization and innovation: virtual visits for low-risk retina and glaucoma cases, data structuring and the use of artificial intelligence, as well as the modernization of the surgical area to improve safety and reduce errors. The Clínic Ophthalmology Institute also aims at achieving patient-centred excellence in care, with optimized pathways for tertiary surgery, and a new intravitreal therapy area based on a single-visit model, which will open before the end of the year. It also aims to promote translational research, foster collaboration with companies to co-create new technologies, reinforce its international presence, and consolidate resident training in order to remain among the top MIR positions.
Finally, it is committed to a participatory and talent retention model, with the aim of consolidating the Clínic Ophthalmology Institute as a centre of excellence in ophthalmology and a benchmark on a European scale. In the context of an ageing population and an increase in chronic eye diseases, the appointment of Dr Marta Pazos reinforces the Clínic’s commitment to high-level, patient-centred care that is open to innovation.
